How to Grade by Lab in the SI Lab Portal (Recommended)

Updated on

1. Enter the course you wish to grade and select the "Gradebook" tab in the upper right corner of your screen.

If you are using integrated links, simply click on the SI Lab Portal Gradebook link in your LMS for quick access to the gradebook.

2. Select "Class Grades" from the drop down menu.

Skip this step if you are using a Gradebook link from your LMS.

3. Filter the gradebook to view the labs you wish to grade, then click Search.

For best practices and recommendations on how to filter the gradebook, review Accessing and Filtering the SI Portal Gradebook.

We recommend you set the rows to 50 or higher before clicking Search. The display will default to 20 items (rows).  Setting the rows to a higher number will ensure you see all results on one page.

These search filters will only display work that needs to be graded.

If a student has not yet submitted an activity, their cell will remain blank. If there is no work to be graded, a green banner will display "All Caught Up! No assignments currently need manual grading."

To view all grades, including completed grades, visit How to View Completed Grades

4. In the "Class Grades" section, click the purple check box next to the activity title or the link in the orange banner to open the manual grading window.

5. The gradebook will automatically open the first question that needs to be manually graded.

To explore the features of the manual grading window, review the table below

1. Question boxes

Along the top of the page, a box for every item in the lab will display.

Grey boxes indicate content items or auto graded questions.

Orange boxes indicate work that needs to be graded.

Green boxes with a check mark indicate questions that are completely graded.

2. Grade indicatorDisplays the number of attempts and how many attempts remain ungraded for the question.
3. Class rosterYou class roster will display all current student submissions, grade status, and score.
4. Student responses and marking guideThe student's response to the question and a marking guide (or answer key) provided by the Science Interactive Curriculum Team will display in a side-by-side format to the right of your roster.
5. Grading management toolsThe tools at the bottom of the page will let you preview the question, review grade history, record internal notes, and leave feedback for students

6. To apply scores, click the name of a student to view their response, then type the score into the grade column.

As you apply scores, a green check mark will appear next to the student score on the roster and the grade indicator will keep track of how many responses are still ungraded for the question.

If you need to modify a grade, click the current score and type in the new score.  Click enter to apply the change.

For a faster grading experience, try the bulk grading feature! To learn more, visit How to Bulk Grade an Assignment.

7. If you want to leave feedback for students, open the thought bubble icon to open the feedback window.

8. Type your feedback in the window and click the disk icon to save your comments.

The feedback window will close when you click save.  To view the feedback again, click the thought bubble icon to reopen the window.

For step-by-step instructions and more details on leaving student feedback, visit How to Leave and Review Student Feedback

9. Proceed to the next question to continue grading.

When grading is complete:

Once all responses have been graded, the full roster will display green checkmarks and the question box at the top of the screen will turn green with a checkmark.  The grade indicator will also reflect 0 ungraded attempts.

When the entire lab is graded, and all of the boxes at the top of the page display green, the final grades will transfer back to the LMS.
