Grade Sync Troubleshooting Tips

Updated on

If you’re noticing that grades are not syncing from SI Portal to your LMS, do not worry — this is often easy to resolve.

Here are some common troubleshooting tips to help you get things back on track:

Expand or collapse content Grades not syncing for ALL students

First, ensure that all work is fully graded.  One of the most common reasons grades do not sync is that not all work has been graded — even partially graded assignments can prevent a successful sync. Finalized or submitted grades will pass back to the LMS.

To check this at a glance, follow the steps below.

1. Select the assignment where grades are not passing back

2. Set the filter choice to "Manual Grading Filter"

3. Select the Search button at the bottom of the page.

If you have work to grade, an orange banner will appear with the labs that need to be graded.  For an overview of how to grade, please visit SI Lab Portal Gradebook - Navigation and Walkthrough

If grading is complete, you will see a green banner that reads "All caught up! No assignments currently need manual grading.

Expand or collapse content Grades not syncing for ALL students - after grading is complete

Occasionally, settings or changes to a lab link within the LMS prevent grade pass back.  Below is a list of settings you can check in your course:

If an assignment link has been reset or changed after students have completed the assignment, the grades will not pass back because the connection to the LMS gradebook was broken.

Unfortunately this cannot be corrected, please manually input the grades in your LMS gradebook.

If the students are only being provided a Class Home Page link, and not individual lab links, the grades will not pass back.

Please reach out to our Implementation Team for support with adding individual lesson links if you would like grades to sync in your LMS.

D2L and CanvasA due date set in a D2L or Canvas assignment has been known to prevent grades from passing back.  Once the assignment is fully graded, temporarily removing the due date to allow the grades to transfer may resolve the issue.

If automatic zeroes or penalties are affecting grade pass back, this is due to the settings in your LMS.

Please reach out to your institution's LMS/IT team for assistance with assignment settings.

Expand or collapse content Grades not syncing for ONE or SOME students

When a student logs into the SI Lab Portal manually, instead of through the LTI links in your LMS, the connection to the gradebook is never established.  Students must navigate to their assignments using the links in the LMS for grades to pass back successfully.  If they do not do this, you will need to manually enter their grades in the LMS gradebook.

2. Ensure the student has submitted the assignment

If a student does not fully submit an assignment, it cannot be fully graded and the grade will not pass back. As the instructor, you have the option to Force Grade a student, which will submit the assignment for them and push their resulting grades to the gradebook.

If your students are reporting that they cannot submit the assignment, please reach out to our Implementation Team so we can futher investigate.

If you have tried these tips and are still experiencing grade sync issues, please complete the Instructor Support Form and a member of our team will reach out to provide assistance.
