Understanding the Gradebook Icon Colors

Updated on

Progress Icon Colors (Gradebook Dashboard)

The gradebook progress icon colors are designed to indicate student activity within a lesson and can be viewed on the gradebook dashboard. Based on the policies that are set in many lessons, the normal behavior for the icons would be:

  • Green: If a student has viewed, attempted, and passed all the sections and the lesson has been submitted (e.g., force graded, as the submit buttons are turned off).
  • Yellow: The lesson is in progress (it has been opened and not force graded).
  • Red: The lesson has been submitted (e.g., force graded) and one of the passing criteria was not met (viewed, attempted, and passed).
  • No Icon: The student has not started their attempt.

There is a special circumstance for our content that makes it so the icon will never be green, which has to do with our data table questions.

To make those questions manually gradeable, our curriculum authors hid an essay question in the source code of the question, that the student will never see.

However, Portal still interprets it as being there, so the students will always fail the passing criteria for that lesson, as they will never view or attempt it.

Expand or collapse content Tips to See the Green Checkmark
  • In the lesson policies, change the setting "Complete When" to "Viewed All Sections" or "Viewed and Attempted."
  • Turn on the "Submit" button.

For a review of setting policies, please review Lesson Setup: Setting Lesson Policies.

Status Icon Colors (Student Log)

To learn how to view a student log, visit this help article.

The gradebook status icon colors are designed to indicate the status of an activity and can be viewed in the student log. Based on the policies that are set in many lessons, the normal behavior for the icons would be:

  • Passed (Green): If an activity has been submitted and achieved a passing grade.
  • In Progress (Yellow): If an attempt has been started, but not yet submitted.
  • Not Passed (Red): If an activity has been submitted and did not achieve a passing grade.
  • Question Mark (Yellow): Feedback on this activity is restricted. (This is rarely seen)
  • Pending (Stacked green check and red x): The activity is either still In Progress or Submitted and in need of manual grading.
