Linking to the SI Lab Portal Gradebook from a Canvas Course

Updated on

Once the SI Lab Portal LTI link has been configured in your Canvas environment, instructors can add a link that takes users directly to the SI Lab Portal Gradebook for a specific class.

Important: A Gradebook link only provides access to the SI Lab Portal Gradebook. Users cannot access other SI Lab Portal areas through this link.

Know Before You Begin

  • Gradebook mapping creates an LTI link that takes users directly to a class Gradebook.
  • Users can only access Gradebook functions through this link.
  • User views within the Gradebook will vary based on their Canvas role.
  • Individual activity links must still be created for graded activities that require grade passback.

1. Open your Canvas course and click Assignments.

2. Create an Assignment

3. Configure the External Tool

Scroll down to Submission Type.  In this section:

  • Click the dropdown menu and select External Tool.

  • Click Find and then select the SI Lab Portal Tool (naming conventions will vary by institution.)

  • The activity mapping window may open automatically; if it doesn't, Click Select.

The SI Lab Portal Mapping menu will appear in the Add Activity window.

Open the dropdown to select the SI Lab Portal class you want to link.  This setting may be preserved if you have already selected the dropdown in a previous session.

5. Create the LTI Link

Click Link to Gradebook to create the link to the course gradebook.

5. Complete the Tool configuration

The Configure External Tool box will appear again.  Scroll down and check the box to Load in a New Tab, then click Select.

We recommend that you relabel this item to say SI Lab Portal Gradebook to avoid any confusion in future course copies.

Once you're done, click Save and Publish.

To modify a lesson link after it has been created:

  1. Open Assignments in your Canvas course.

  2. Select the activity you want to edit and select Edit Assignment Settings in the top right corner.

  3. Update the settings as needed, then click Save.

All Science Interactive Links must be set to open in a new tab or window.

If you see an SI Lab Portal page embedded in Canvas, it is possible the activity has the wrong display setting.

Click Edit Assignment Settings, then scroll down to Submission Type, and check Load this Tool in a New Tab.  Then click Save.
