How to Clone a Lesson in SI Lab Portal

Cloning lessons allows you to reuse existing lessons while keeping your version separate from the original. This ensures edits you make do not automatically propagate from the source lesson.

Ways to Clone Lessons

  • Individually – Use the Clone into My Class function to copy a single lesson.
  • In Bulk – Use the Clone function on the bulk action bar to copy multiple lessons at once.

Cloning Shared Lessons

  • Lessons shared by other instructors or classes are marked with a Green Shared Content icon in the Content Repository.
  • Select the lesson under the Current Class pane, click Lessons and Assignments, and choose to clone lessons individually or in bulk. Select clone at the bottom of the page.
  • Once cloned, your version can be edited without affecting the original lesson.

Cloning Inherited Lessons in Child Classes

  • Child classes inherit lessons from parent classes, also marked with the Green Shared Content icon.
  • Clone inherited lessons to your child class to edit them independently. Changes in the parent lesson will not affect your cloned copy.

Where Cloned Lessons Are Stored

  • Cloned lessons appear in your Content Repository with the up and down arrows and a folder icon, without the green Shared Content icon.
  • Be sure to edit title names to the unit and lessons to differentiate from original lesson and cloned lesson.
  • The original lesson (shared or inherited) remains in its original unit.

Additional Tips

  • Use Course Modules to further separate cloned content from shared or inherited lessons.
  • Check out Control Activity Visibility to manage whether the original parent lesson is visible to students on the Class Homepage.

How to Use the Visual Editor

What It Is
The Visual Editor is a toolbar used in lessons, questions, hints, and other content areas to format and style what students see.

Key Features

  • Format text: bold, italics, underline, lists, alignment.
  • Insert objects: images, tables, external content, links.
  • Use math symbols and special characters (including equation editor).
  • Change display settings: full-screen editing, show HTML source, etc.

Tips for Professors

  • Hover over each icon to see what it does.
  • If content is shared or inherited, clone it before editing so your changes do not affect the original. (Visual Editor works after cloning.)

Summary
The Visual Editor gives you tools to polish lesson appearance, add media, and make sure content is readable and visually clear. Use it to make lessons cleaner, clearer, and more engaging.
